What is Bonga?

Bonga is our new messaging platform which allows easier convenience for payments. Bonga enables you to chat with friends, send, receive and also request for money, all within one screen.

Bonga Features and Functionalities

What features and functionalities do I expect to find on Bonga?

  1. Bonga gives you the ability to converse with your friends and family.
  2. Bonga enables you to send or request money (an exciting new feature!) within a single chat!
  3. Bonga also allows you to carry out M-PESA functionalities such as Lipa Na M-PESA and buying airtime

Installation and Registration

How can I get the app?

Bonga is currently under beta testing. A specific group of users have been whitelisted as beta testers. Those selected have received an sms inviting them to be a tester. Additional users will be invited at a future date. If you wish to be part of the closed beta group, kindly sign up at and share your details.

Please note:

  1. Once you have launched Bonga, a text message will be sent to your handset or tablet with the One Time PIN (“OTP”). DO NOT SHARE THE OTP WITH ANY THIRDPARTY.
  2. If you have an Android enabled handset or tablet the OTP is auto read by your phone automatically and then you select the “Login” option
  3. Once you have logged in you will be requested to accept the Terms and Conditions, and Bonga will launch the home page.

Why do we get one time PINs from random phone numbers?

This is a security measure to ensure the protection of your identity.

Why can't I log-in to the app ?

During the beta testing phase,everyone will be able to download Bonga but only the whitelisted people will be able to log in.

What are the terms and conditions for using Bonga?

You must agree to Bonga’s terms and conditions to use the app. The terms and conditions can be found

How do I uninstall Bonga ?

Each phone is unique. Uninstall and delete as you would any other app on your phone

How do I Reinstall Bonga?

If you want to reinstall Bonga, please follow the following steps:

  1. Visit your Google Play Store and search for the Bonga app
  2. Install the app as you would any other app

Account and Profile

Is it free to send messages over Bonga?

Bonga is FREE of charge. We do not charge you to use Bonga. However normal network data charges and M-PESA transaction charges apply

Do I need my sim card to register for Bonga?

It is a security requirement that you have your SIM card in the phone when you register and when undertaking all your M-PESA transactions.

How do I manage my profile?

Tap on the drop down menu (three dots at the top right of the app) and choose the Profile option.

Chats

Read receipts ?

  1. One grey tick ( ✓ ) indicates that the message has been sent, but not yet received by the recipient.
  2. Two grey ticks ( ✓✓ ) indicate that the message has been read.
  3. Two purple ticks ( ✓✓) indicate that your message has been received and read.

How do I send money in chat?

Below are the steps you need to follow in order to perform a send money transaction within the chat:

  1. The M-PESA option is located on the bottom right. Clear the chat typing section, in order to enable the M-PESA option ( ) to appear. If the chat typing section is already clear, the M-PESA option will be enabled by default.
  2. Tap on the M-PESA button and select the “Send Money” option which is coloured purple.
  3. Enter the amount that you would like to send.
  4. You will be prompted to confirm the amount. Confirm you have typed the correct amount, then click next (green button) to proceed.
  5. You will then be prompted to enter your M-PESA PIN.
  6. After entering your PIN, the transaction will be completed

How do I request for money?

Below are the steps you need to follow in order to perform a send money transaction within the app:

  1. The M-PESA option ( ) is located on the bottom right. Clear the chat typing section, in order to enable the M-PESA option to appear. If the chat typing section is already clear, the M-PESA option will be enabled by default.
  2. Tap on the M-PESA button and select the “Request Money” option which is coloured orange.
  3. Enter the amount that you would like to request.
  4. You will be prompted to confirm the amount. Confirm you have typed the correct amount, then click next ( ) to proceed.
  5. Whomever you have requested the money from will receive a notification from you within their chat requesting the exact amount you typed. They can choose to send the requested funds, send a partial amount, or none at all. Requesting money does not guarantee you will receive funds.

Do we have backup chats ?

Bonga currently does not have the option that allows you to recover your chats when you update Bonga from one version to another or change your phone. We are working to incorporate this in a future version of the app.

M-pesa Transactions

What are the transactional limits?

You can transact between KES 1 and KES 70,000 per transaction. Normal M-Pesa limits apply. You can find the M-PESA transaction charges and limits .

How do I buy airtime, buy goods and services, pay bills or send money?

Below are the steps to follow when you want to perform the above transactions:

  1. Click on the bar menu (☰) icon on the top left side of your screen.
  2. Multiple options, including send money, buy goods and services, pay bill and buy airtime functionalities are listed.
  3. Click on any of these services and input your desired amount.

Why do I have the Send Money Option on the bar menu?

This option is available to send money to anyone. It is the preferable option to send money to individuals you don’t have a desire to have a chat discussion. This option also allows you to search and send money to individuals in your contact list.

How do I Check M-Pesa balance ?

If you want to check your M-PESA balance please follow these steps:

  1. Go to the bar menu (☰) icon on the top left side of your screen,
  2. Tap on the green “Show Balance” button directly below your profile name,
  3. Enter your M-PESA PIN. Your M-PESA balance will appear shortly thereafter.

Additionally, you will also receive an SMS from M-PESA indicating your balance.

How do I Check M-Pesa balance ?

  1. Similar to regular M-pesa transactions, you will receive an SMS from M-PESA. Confirmation of transactions within a chat will appear in the chat where the send or request money occured.
  2. For Lipa Na Mpesa transactions, you will receive an SMS from M-PESA confirming the transaction.

Security and Privacy

Are my transactions secure?

Security and privacy are paramount to Bonga. We use world class end-to-end encryption techniques to ensure that your messages and transactions remain confidential and secure. End-to-end encryption ensures that only you and the person you are communicating with can read the contents of your message. Not even we at Bonga can read your messages.

Troubleshooting

Why won’t my Bonga app launch ?

If your app no longer launches you can try one of the two options:

  1. Close your app and restart it.
  2. If the above does not work, uninstall the app and reinstall it via the Google Play Store

Will Bonga operate if I have connectivity issues?

If you face any connectivity issues check the following :

  1. For Bonga to work, your device must be connected to the internet.
  2. If you are still having trouble when your device is connected to the internet, close the app and restart it. If the problem persists, contact us using the “Talk to us” option located on the top right menu (Three dots at the top right of the app).

When will desktop/Video call/voice be available?
